Abstract : In order to redue the wastage of feeds and release of metabolites in the culture environment, studies on some aspects of nutrition in Indian major carps were carps were carried out. Studies have revealed that with the incorporation of processed soybean or canola, fish meal can be replaced from the diets of Indian major carps without any deleterious impact on growth performance and digestibility. Fortification of diets with mineral premix and amino acids further enhances growth performances and also reduces the release of metabolites like N- NH4 and o-P04.Different oilcakes can also be utilized as protein source in the supplementary diets., however, groundnut oilcake appears to be more effective. Wet heat treatment of soybean and soaking oilcakes for 24 h in water helps in the reduction of different antinutritional factors such as trypsin inhibitors, phytate phosphorous and tannins etc. Optimum protein requirements for higher growth indicate that Indian major carps require about 40 per cent dietary protein irrespective of the source, however higher growth was observed when processed soybean was used as the proteni source. Studies on restricted feeding regime indicate that fishes be fed at 3% BW d-1 and provision of three feedings d-1 appears to be optimum for higher growth. Singificantly (p<0.05) higher growth performance and nutrient retention were observed in the group fed between 1200h- 1600 h, indicating that C. Mringala is a diurnal feeder. Further, the use of plant oringin proteins in fish diets and feeding the fishes on optimum protein levels and at optimum dietary levels at feeding frequency or delivering the ration at an appropriate time of the day leads to the reduction in the release of metabolites, which can alleviate the pollution problems associated with intensive aquaculture system.

Abstract : The aim of present study was to evaluate nephroprotective potential of ethanolic extract of Tagetes minuta (EETM). Thirty six rats were used in this experiment and they were divided into six groups (n=6).Group I (control) received distilled water for 30 days orally. Nephrotoxicity was induced by carbon tetrachloride (11 % v/v with olive oil) 2 ml/kg b. wt. once a week for 30 days. Group III and IV received only herb in two doses 100 and 250 mg/kg of body weight respectively. Group V and VI received ethanolic extract of Tagetes minuta (100 and 250 mg/kg of b.wt.) along with carbon tetrachloride (11 % v/v with olive oil) 2 ml/kg b. wt. once a week for the time period of 30 days. Blood urea nitrogen, urea and creatinine levels were studied in various groups of experimental animals. It was observed that CCl 4 treatment induced significant elevation (P<0.001) in the levels of blood urea nitrogen, urea and creatinine. However, treatment with ethanolic extract of said plant significantly (P<0.001) restored the altered levels of these kidney biomarkers in a dose dependant manner. This finding powerfully supports that ethanolic extract of Tagetes minuta acts as potent scavenger of free radicals to prevent the toxic effect of carbon tetrachloride and hence validate its ethnomedicinal use.

Abstract :Medicinal plants are rich in antioxidants which are used to treat many human diseases. Antioxidants are the chemical substances which give their own electron to the free radicals thus check their damage causing potential in the body. The research is going on worldwide with main focus on natural antioxidants from plant origin. The aims of the present study were to check the presence of various phytochemicals, to explore the in vitro antioxidant activity, total phenolic and total flavonoid contents of Colocasia esculenta leaves. The results lead us to the conclusion that the extract of Colocasia esculenta leaves did possess the fair number of phytochemicals, showed the decent antioxidant activity and contained the good total phenolic and total flavonoid contents.

Abstract : The present investigation was aimed to study the protective role of ethanolic leaf extract of Coleus amboinicus against carbon tetrachloride induced hepatotoxicity in rats. The extract was administered at 200 mg/kg of body weight and the hepatoprotective activity was assessed by measuring biochemical parameters like ALT, AST, ALP, ACP, Total Protein and Total bilirubin. Biochemical studies showed that there was significant increase in the levels of ALT, AST, ALP, ACP and Total bilirubin while, the level of Total protein was decreased when rats were treated with carbon tetrachloride 2 ml/kg once a week for the period of 30 days. The altered level of these liver biomarkers was retrieved significantly near to control level when rats were given access to the ethanolic extract of Coleus amboinicus (EECE) at the dose of 200 mg/kg of body weight. The results of this study strongly indicate that EECA has got a potent hepatoprotective action against carbon tetrachloride induced hepatic damage in rats.
