Alteration of Acid Phosphatase Activity in the Liver of Gamma Irradiated Mouse by Centella asiatica

Abstract: Acid phosphatase activity increases above normal in the liver of whole body irradiated animals. It is considered to be one of the adverse radiation effects. Increase in the acid phosphatase activity was dose dependent. Centella asiatica extract, which increased the survival of gamma irradiated Swiss albino mouse when given prior to irradiation was tested to observe changes in the acid phosphatase activity in the liver of irradiated mouse. It was observed that Centella asiatica extract when given orally one hour prior to irradiation, significantly decreased acid phosphatase activity towards normal in the liver of irradiated mouse. This shows sign of protection offered by the plant extract.

Life Cycle Duration of Philosamia ricinii (L.) on Thirteen Released Castor Varieties as Different Host Plants for Appraisal of Best Variety / Varieties.

Abstract: Life cycle duration of philosamia ricinii (L.) was studied on thirteen released castor varieties for the evaluation of best host variety, in the experiment designed as bio-assay of the castor leaves using erisilk worm and it was found that variety RHC-1 to be the best as the eriworm complete its life cycle very early about (35.2 ± 6.1) days, followed by variety TMV-5  (35.3 ± 4.8) days and on Aruna (36.0 ± 4.8) days respectively. This worm takes longer time to complete its life cycle when reared on variety SKI-73 (41.7 ± 9.6) days and longest on variety CO-1 (44.7 ± 12.5) days. Temperature light, humidity and overcrowding of the worms in the container was also considered to be the factors responsible for effecting the life cycle duration of the worm.

Plasma Magnesium Levels in the Stingray, Dasyatis akajei in Response to Administration of Salmon Calcitonin

Abstract:Salmon calcitonin was administered to the stingray, Dasyatis akajei to investigate effects on plasma magnesium levels. The plasma magnesium levels remained unchanged in the 6-hr period following the calcitonin injection. From these data, it appears that calcitonin plays no role in the endocrine regulation of magnesium.

Critical load – A New Approach, Concept and Applications

Abstract:Deposition of S and N oxides causes acidification and eutrophication of aquatic ecosystem. Critical load is being used by most of the European countries as a tool to set goals for future acid deposition such that the environment is protected. In present communication, critical load concept, steady state mass method, which is commonly used for deriving this load and its application for aquatic ecosystem have been discussed. The method is very simple to apply but major problem lies primarily in the estimation of authentic input data. By using this approach it is possible to identify the controls on ‘S’ and ‘N’ deposition which may be required to protect the ecosystem in future thus making it as a powerful tool for planning acidification abatement policies for a region.

Effect of Certain Antibiotics on Pollen Germination and Pollen Tube Growth in Tecomella undulata and Haplophragma adenophyllum.

Absrtact: Antibiotics show favourable effect on pollen germination and pollen tube growth in both the plants. Among all the antibiotics tried penicillin proved to the most effective and norfloxacin the least in both the plants.

Scourge of High Fluoride in Ground Waters of Arid Rajasthan and Strategy of Its Mitigation.

Abstract:The occurrence of high fluoride concentration in ground water has now become one of the most important health related geoenvironmental issues in many countries of the world. Our country is also confronting the same problem where the high fluoride concentration in ground water resources and the resultant disease “Fluorosis” is evenly distributed in nearly 150 districts of 15 states. It has been observed that about 25 million people in 8700 village in india are using ground water having fluoride content more than 1.5 mg/l. In Rajasthan, ground waters of the western and some southern part of the state are enriched with high fluoride concentration. The arid areas of the state are prone to both dental and skeletal fluorosis. As per P.h.e. Deptt. out of 37,889 villages and 45,311 habitations. 9741 villages and 6819 habitations, ground waters are enriched with excess fluoride content. The extent of severity was observed in Nagaur, Pali, Barmer, Jalore and Sikar district. It has also been observed that besides water other factors viz. nutritional deficiencies, high ambient temperature, high alkalinity and low calcium content and vitamin C are also responsible for endemic fluorosis. In recent years there has been a tremendous increase in the sale of sachets of Pan masala, Gutka, mouthwash and mouth ringes in north India in general and Rajasthan in particular, these are also rich sources of fluoride. Therefore, for the welfare of mankind such items must be banned. Since it is a socio-economic disease, therefore, it is imperative to mitigate the problem by adopting suitable scientific measures to protect the consumers.

Role of Spinacia oleracea as Antioxidant : A Biochemical Study on Mice Brain after Exposure of Gamma Radiation

Abstract:Present study is an attempt to investigate the radioprotective efficacy of spinach against radiation induced oxidative stress, since its leaves are rich in antioxidants like carotenoids (lutein, b-carotene, zeaxanthin), p-Coumaric acid, ascorbic acid, proteins, vitamins etc. Healthy Swiss albino male mice of 6-week-old age groups were selected from an inbred colony; maintained on standard mice feed and water ad libitum. For the experiments, mice were divided in four groups. Group I (normal) it did not received any treatment. Group II (drug treated) was orally supplemented spinach extract once daily at the dose of 1100 mg/kg.b.wt. /day for 15 consecutive days dissolved in double distilled water. Group III (experimental) was also administered orally spinach extract at the dose of 1100 mg/kg.b.wt./day for 15 consecutive days thereafter exposed to single dose of 5 Gy of gamma radiation at the dose rate of 1.07 Gy/min. Group IV (control) received distilled water orally equivalent to spinach extract for 15 days thereafter it was exposed to 5 Gy of gamma radiation. After the exposure mice were sacrificed at different autopsy intervals viz. 1,3,7,15 and 30 days. Brain was removed and processed to estimate lipid peroxidation (LPO). Radiation induced significant elevation in the LPO values, which were lowered by supplementation of spinach prior to irradiation at all the intervals studied. At day 30th LPO values attained normalcy in the experimental group, but in the control group LPO values was still higher by approximately 12%. The levels of LPO products in brain of SE supplemented mice activates antioxidant enzymes in brain suggesting that spinach leaf extract reduces LPO values by quenching free radicals. The protection rendered with SE in LPO value of brain in the present study indicates the possible role Spinacia as radioprotector to some extent if taken continuously which might be due to synergistic effect of antioxidant constituents present in the spinach.

Detection of +vely and –vely charged protein and lipid fractions in the ovaries of Musca domestica treated with Annona squamosa seed extract

Abstract: Musca is a house fly transmitting a number of diseases in human beings and their livestock and having high rate of fertility. To control the fertility the flies were topically treated with sub lethal concentrations of Annona squamosa seed extract and protein and lipid fractions were detected out from the ovaries of 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 days control and experimental flies by paper electrophoresis. The results are summarized in electrophoretograms Fig. No. 1- 4 showed the gradual increase in the number of protein and lipid fractions in the ovaries of control flies indicated the phase of vitellogenesis while depletion in the numbers as well as the decrease in the intensity of protein and lipid fractions due to the intoxication effect of the treated extract was correlated with the formation of large number of degenerated pathological oocytes in the ovaries which never attain such maturity which is required for oviposition, so in the treated flies the extract acts as anti-ovipositional agent and it is quite significant after formulation and synthesize in large quantity it should be use to control the other pest insects of our valuable crops and increase the economy of Indian farmers.
